An incredibly adaptable aquatic species, Klipeta Kaptos can be found in any underwater environment—freshwater lakes, brackish estuaries, even the ocean—where food is readily available. They hunt by burrowing into the sediment just deep enough to be hidden from view, then using their prehensile tail pincher to grab fish passing overhead. Their strong front claws are used to hold prey while they feed and to fight off predators. Males also use them to battle other males during their breeding season. Older males often have chips and scars on their exoskeleton from such encounters. The colors of Klipeta Kapto exoskeletons are quite diverse, ranging from duller shades to vibrant ones. As the creatures themselves are not poisonous in nature, it is possible they evolved such hues as a form of protective mimicry.

The creatures that dwell in this rather desolate world still display some diversity in appearance, eating habits, and social behavior. Whether they have fur or feathers, skin or scales, their unique genetic makeup allows for a variety of colors and markings within each species. Despite limitations in food sources, herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores are all present in the food chain, and each species requires specialized care within a laboratory. Although the artificial setting of housing units and breeding pods precludes most opportunities to study true interspecific behavior, the interactions within and between species has been studied extensively in the wilderness by scientists daring enough to venture beyond the outpost’s walls.
