When this juvenile emerged, it seemed aquatic in appearance, but it floats in the air rather than in water. Since its gaseous sac is not fully developed, it uses its strong, suckered tentacles to cling to surfaces. It eats small insects, which it catches with its more delicate feeding tentacles before drawing them into its translucent stomach for digestion. Though its top is soft to the touch, its feeding tentacles can deliver a painful sting.
