Thick and burly, with massive claws and heaps of muscle, the Kasa Gardanto is intimidating despite its relatively small size. Subterranean by nature, Kasa Gardantos spend nearly all of their lives underground and only leave the safety of their burrows by night. Because of their dark homes and subsequently poor eyesight, their interactions with one another are mostly through touch, sound, and especially scent. They have a complex series of pheromones, released from glands all over their bodies, that can signify anything from danger to friendliness to a desire to mate. Kasa Gardantos live in large colonies consisting of multiple families, with big communal rooms flanked by smaller family dens. Of the communal rooms, the most important is the larder, where all sorts of small invertebrates are kept living but paralyzed thanks to the venomous bite of the Kasa Gardanto. While this venom is ineffective for defense—Kasa Gardantos rely on their thick claws and plated armor to protect themselves—it is highly potent for the insects that make up the Kasa Gardanto's diet.
The creatures that dwell in this rather desolate world still display some diversity in appearance, eating habits, and social behavior. Whether they have fur or feathers, skin or scales, their unique genetic makeup allows for a variety of colors and markings within each species. Despite limitations in food sources, herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores are all present in the food chain, and each species requires specialized care within a laboratory. Although the artificial setting of housing units and breeding pods precludes most opportunities to study true interspecific behavior, the interactions within and between species has been studied extensively in the wilderness by scientists daring enough to venture beyond the outpost’s walls.
