Often found near estuaries, lakes, and other quiet bodies of water in tropical climes, Vetura Oazos can be difficult to spot at first thanks to their impressive camouflage. Moss, mushrooms, and even plant life can take root in their porous shells, slowly growing over the years into a cultivation that serves as disguise and even nourishment in moments of necessity. Vetura Oazos are not particularly social, preferring to wander alone, though small groups are sometimes observed in areas with abundant food sources. Males and females only remain together long enough to mate before going their separate ways again, and eggs are laid and buried in sand before being left to survive on their own. Although they are capable of swimming, Vetura Oazos prefer to remain in the shallows and avoid turbulent water, likely due to the damage that could be done to their defensive flora.
The creatures that dwell in this rather desolate world still display some diversity in appearance, eating habits, and social behavior. Whether they have fur or feathers, skin or scales, their unique genetic makeup allows for a variety of colors and markings within each species. Despite limitations in food sources, herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores are all present in the food chain, and each species requires specialized care within a laboratory. Although the artificial setting of housing units and breeding pods precludes most opportunities to study true interspecific behavior, the interactions within and between species has been studied extensively in the wilderness by scientists daring enough to venture beyond the outpost’s walls.
