When it first emerges, this juvenile clings tightly to the nearest source of warmth, whether that is its mother, a heat source, or an unwary scientist’s finger. Care must be taken when handling it to avoid injuring such a small, delicate creature. After a few weeks, however, it begins to flap its wings in a clumsy manner and is eventually able to make short, hopping flights between roosting spots.
