When hungry, this juvenile makes rough hacking sounds deep in its throat, mimicking the sound made by its parents when they regurgitate food. It eats several times a day and naps for a few hours between meals before waking to demand more nourishment. As it grows larger, it begins to venture out of the rocky nest, though it is not yet strong enough to follow its parents to the ocean to hunt.
