The nocturnal Nokta Voko’s floral-like posterior plumage catches even the faintest bit of light and shimmers slightly, attracting moths and other nighttime insects upon which they feed. These solitary birds are rarely spotted with another except during breeding season, when they migrate from their winter homes in sheltered bays and swampy meadows toward more forested areas. During resting periods between long flights, they will seek out a mate with low, rattling calls that carry over great distances. Although some Nokta Vokos do return to the same mate, it is not uncommon for them to find a new one each year. Mating pairs will seek out a secluded marshy spot in which to build their nest, beneath the tree canopy if possible for added protection. They are very territorial while nesting and are quick to attack any perceived threat. For a few months after their chicks hatch, they will remain together to watch over their young, but once the chicks are large enough to survive on their own, the parents will go their separate ways again.

The creatures that dwell in this rather desolate world still display some diversity in appearance, eating habits, and social behavior. Whether they have fur or feathers, skin or scales, their unique genetic makeup allows for a variety of colors and markings within each species. Despite limitations in food sources, herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores are all present in the food chain, and each species requires specialized care within a laboratory. Although the artificial setting of housing units and breeding pods precludes most opportunities to study true interspecific behavior, the interactions within and between species has been studied extensively in the wilderness by scientists daring enough to venture beyond the outpost’s walls.
